Project Motivation
From 2007-2010, my family and I lived in Hanoi, Vietnam. While there, I participated in the Boy Scouts of America Lone Scout program through BSA's Far East Council. From the 7th through the 10th grade I studied at the United Nations International School of Hanoi (UNIS Hanoi), which instills a strong service orientation in its students. During my years in Hanoi, I had the opportunity to travel and give service throughout Vietnam, including in and around Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Also while there, my family was able to adopt a Vietnamese baby, Vi Anh Quan from Binh Duong provice. Abandoned at a hospital, he lived at an orphanage in Southern Vietnam until 2009 when he became part of our family. As you can see, Vietnam has a special place in my life and it is my hope that this project will provide a way for me to connect my home nation, the United States, with a country that is important to me and my family- Vietnam.
During a visit with UNIS to Thuy An Orphanage, I was considering Eagle Projects to carry out, and this visit at the end of my 10th grade year convinced me that this was the place to do it! I considered my circumstances- a Boy Scout from a fortunate family who lived abroad due to his father's job- very unique, and felt that I was in a special position to make a difference for the orphanage. Thus, I proceeded to plan and carry out this project, even though my family had returned to the United States for a few years.
I am currently a member of the Venture Crew 137 of the BSA Flint River, GA Council.
