Today was another exhausting day! In the morning, I met with Mr. Buckner and Mr. Rees after having called our irrigation equipment provider who claimed that the system we had been planning on purchasing was unavailable. So we paid a visit to the provider, where we discussed an alternative system more appropriate for the garden we planned on irrigating but which would introduce some new complications to the plan. The drip tape, or the hose-like line which drips water to the trees, was larger in this new system, and would have to stem from a line of PVC pipe which we would have to cut holes in. However, the largest complication was that the tank of water, which fed water into the garden via the drip tape, would have to be raised in the air at least 2 meters. This height was not only physically dangerous but also introduced the new issue of weather or not the orphanages current pump was strong enough to pump water from the source (a pond at the orphanage) all the way up to the bucket about 300 meters away. The alternative solution was to purchase and install a new pump altogether, but this might require approval from the orphanage director, might involve piping an entirely new line from the pond, and might require the pump to be on for extended lengths of time, a prospect the orphanage's director was uncomfortable with. Ultimately, our decision was to purchase the drip tape, the appropriate fittings, and a sprinkler (for the other garden), and wait until our visit tomorrow (Saturday), when we would proceed to lay the piping as we had initally planned (a line connecting the existing line from the pond to another garden 300 meters away) as well as examine the land and its features and speak with the director before we come to a final decision is made. We then planned on probably making another trip on the following Monday to actually install the irrigation system.
So the plan for tomorrow's trip includes visiting the orphanage and examining the land and the exact distances involved for the irrigation system, delivering the toy balls and clothes I arranged for on Day 2, digging the ditch and (hopefully) laying PVC pipe to the distant garden and discussing with the director our plan for the irrigation system.
